This year, Milan Design Week is back after two years of physical absence. Celebrating its 60th birthday, Salone del Mobile reminds us why the Italian city is considered the capital of design. From the 7th until the 12th of June 2022, creators, company representatives as well as design enthusiasts will have the chance to learn about all the new trends regarding daily life objects. This year, emphasis will be given to sustainability since designers are now called to answer the question of “how will we live better” and “how will we make better use of resources”.

More than 2.000 exhibitors will welcome 370.000 visitors from around the world. Moreover, Fuorisalone is also part of Design Week -and it’s expected that it will attract an even bigger audience- as is Brera Design Week. The exhibitions, presentations, lectures and installations taking place concurrently all over Milan are organised through the latter institutions. We’ve selected some of the most interesting events to present to you.

The Art of Dreams - Ruby Barber for Porsche

For the maiden appearance of the famous car company at Milan Design Week, floral artist Ruby Barber, founder of Studio Mary Lennox, was called to create a unique sculptural exhibition around the themes of the fragile nature of flowers and the beauty of nature, seeking the ways to showcase them through contemporary technology.

Paradox Garden - Parasite 2.0 for XL Extralight

In this paradoxical garden, the visitor interacts with 5 machines - oversized installations based on the research of the company XL Extralight. In reality, the exhibition’s objects balance on top of the new products, impressively demonstrating their potential.

Hypernova - Sara Ricciardi for gloTM

Based on the principle of coexistence, Sara Ricciardi created this installation as a course between nature and technology as well as singularity and plurality. The space design, however, does not suggest an opposition between these elements and prompts the visitor to envision a harmonious future.

Florilegio – Cristina Celestino

Understanding the special characteristics of a flower shop environment, designer Cristina Celestino creates a manifesto for interior space nature. Thus, a new type of object is proposed that can coexist with vegetation, while the external climate "invades" inside the room, and the strict line between private and public space is removed.

Memphis Again - Christoph Radl

More than 200 pieces of furniture of various materials, manufactured by the Memphis Group between 1981 and 1986, are to be found in the spaces of the Triennale. The visitor faces the objects in chronological order, in a completely dark setting reminiscent of a club or catwalk, reminding us how influential, in any area of art, was the postmodern design of the group founded by Ettore Sottsass.
